Chinese crude steel production got off to a strong start in June, following May’s record output, as mills benefited from strong support from the construction and auto sectors. China Iron and Steel Association, or CISA, reported on June 16 that output from its members averaged 2.109 million mt/day over June 1-10, up by 0.8% compared to late-May and 2.4% higher on the year. CISA estimated that China’s total crude steel (including non-CISA affiliated mills) over early-June averaged 2.829 million mt/ day, up 1.2% from late-May but 0.4% lower compared to the same period last year. China produced 77.32 million mt of pig iron and a record high 92.27 million mt of crude steel in May, up 2.4% and 4.2% on the year, National Bureau of Statistics data showed. On an annualized basis pig iron and crude steel output came to 910 million mt and 1.086 billion mt a year.
