摘要

Water is necessary for almost every living thing on this planet. Its availability, reliability and quality are fundamental to the environment and to ecology. They are equally fundamental to human health and economic life. We use water in very varied ways. We use it to grow food and fibres. We drink it, cook and wash with it We enjoy it for recreation and for the beauty of lakes, streams and waterfalls. We develop electrical energy from it, sail ships on it, and transport the wastes of cities with it. While people are doing all these things (and many more) with water, the animals, plants, fishes, and birds are trying to satisfy their essential requirements for it too.
