Alliant sets ‘aspirational’ net-zero carbon target, will exit coal faster

Arlington, Virginia—Alliant Energy on July 22 announced a new “aspirational” goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 for its electricity fleet and said it now plans to eliminate all of its coal-fired generation fleet 10 years earlier than previously expected. Alliant is joining a growing list of US utilities that have set concrete or aspirational net-zero emissions targets in line with the findings of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2019, which said the world would need to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by around 2050 to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius relative to preindustrial levels. Utilities have also come under increased pressure from investors to disclose and address their climate change-related risks.
