indiana coal production rises 8% in 2018

Indiana coal production totaled 33.5 million st in 2018, up 8% from in 2017, with output split almost evenly between underground and surface mines, the Indiana Coal Council said. With Indiana production totaling 33.5 million st last year, 17 million st was from surface mines and almost 16.5 million st was from underground mines, up from 31 million st in 2017, the group said in a report. Peabody, with most of its ILB mines in Indiana, produced 13.6 million st in 2018, down slightly from 14 million st in 2018. The St. Louis- based company says it plans to “ease” ILB production in 2019.
