US power sector coal stockpiles totaled 110,431 st at the end of September, down 0.1% compared with the end of August, US Energy Information Administration data showed Tuesday. Compared with the same point a year earlier, stockpiles were up 9.6%, the second consecutive monthly increase after inventories decreased for 37 straight months on a year-on-year basis. The average for the prior five years at the end of September was 136,702 st, some 19.2% above the most recent reporting period’s total, and a greater deficit than the prior month’s 18.9%. Bituminous stockpiles totaled 49,073 st at the end of September, down 1.5% from the end of August and up 20.2% from the year-ago month, the data show.
