Contract awarded for WTC transit hub

Commissioners for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey awarded a $221-million construction contract to fabricate and erect 11,000 tons of steel for the entrance to the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. Called the Oculus and designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, this gateway will serve 250,000 commuters daily. The Oculus will serve as the primary link for pedestrian access to the Path system, 13 New York City subway lines, 500,000 square feet of retail shopping space, four office towers and the World Financial Center.
