Sounds of common voles (Microtus arvalis)

Sound signalization with elements of systematic diagnostics in voles of the genus Microtus is described. Acoustic reactions of four M. arvalis Pallas, 1779 populations referred to two chromosome forms (M. a. arvalis, captured in Ryazan district, Russia; M. a. obscurus, captured in Djungar Alatau, Kazakhstan and in the Talysh mountains. Azerbaijan) were tape recorded. Two signals of voles, squeak and male singing are characterized. Sound signals of different vole populations are similar but the Talysh population differs practically in all parameters due to the prolonged isolation of this population from the middle Pleistocene.
