The Association s Associations: A Committment to Youth Participation

With the publication of New Directions for Library Service to Young Adults (ALA Editions, 2002), the Young Adult Library Services Association has prepared itself for the next generation of librarians and library service to teens. The 146-pagepaperback (see p. 72), is designed to provide direction on how to deliver young-adult services that are proactive and holistic. In addition to developing a new direction for service, YALSA also maintains a commitment to its existing Strategic Plan (www.ala.org/yalsa/yalsainfostratplan.pdf), specifically in the area of Education and Continuous Learning. With the establishment of the Serving the Underserved (SUS) Trainers program (www.ala.org/yalsa/professional/trainersmain.html) in 1994, more than 20,000 librarians, managers, and paraprofessionals have received basic training in such areas as book-talking and handlingadolescent behavior.
