ABS has a long and highly-valued relationship with the shipowning and shipbuilding community in Japan, based on the provision of classification and technical services for close to 70 years. The first ABS office was opened in Kobe in 1949，primarily to provide survey services to US vessels at the port and further offices were subsequently established in Yokohama, Nagasaki and Tokyo.
