The Hills of Valpolicella

COLONEL CANTWELL, IN ERNEST HEMINGWAY'S LEAST APPRECIATED novel, Across the River and into the Trees, was a great fan of Valpolicella, the wine produced northwest of Verona, Italy. Indeed, Hemingway provides the colonel with truly wondrous quantitiesof this good wine. He drinks it at dinner, late at night and in the morning before breakfast, preferring it young, since he feels aging adds nothing to that wine but sediment. And, as there is much of Hemingway himself in the colonel, we must reason that Hemingway immensely enjoyed the wine Valpolicella.
