THERE WAS A TIME WHEN German wine labels so confused me that I (a) followed someone else's recommendations (not always a good or safe practice); (b) chose haphazardly or; (c) avoided German wines altogether. I was young and foolish then. I have sincediscovered that a German wine label is a wealth of very precise information if you will take a bit of time to learn. From our home in Italy, my wife Estelle and I have made numerous trips to Germany, usually exploring the Deutsche Weinstrasse, or wine road, in the Rheinpfalz region since we have the best of friends— from Alabama, of all places—in the area. And new doors to enjoyment and learning have been opened.
