Approximately 0.5% of parathyroid tumours are carcinomas. Figures on incidence are vague, it is considered to be clearly less than 0.5 per 100 000 persons (3). Reports of successful preoperative imaging of parathyroid neoplasias with ultra-sonography, CT, MRI and several nuclear medicine techniques have been published. Among these scintigraphic methods, in situ parathyroid carcinoma has been successfully imaged with Tl-Tc-subtraction- and Tc-sestamibi-scanning (1, 2,4).
