Painting Murals with House Paints

I never set out to be a mural painter; my market took me there. I love a challenge and as each opportunity arose to paint a little beyond my skill level, I was willing "to reach for it." Every step showed me where the next step should be. In the beginning, quality exterior house painting produced requests for nice interior finishes. When I experimented with a little glazing and marbleizing in the early 1980s (the word faux had not yet been introduced), it was a natural add-on to my paint and paper operation. Faux finishes were slow to catch on. I would show my sample boards to decorators and they would scoff, often with upturned noses, and shake their heads with an emphatic "no." In time, they started to call back asking if I still did that "stuff."
