Age-related sperm quality of captive striped bass Morone saxatilis.

Sperm characters were examined in 28 captive-reared striped bass Morone saxatilis aged 1, 3 and 12 years. All groups had similar ranges of the following parameters: expressible milt (5.6±0.5 to 7.5±2.1 ml/kg body weight), percentage of motile spermatozoa (55±6 to 60±2%), duration of sperm motility (69±3 to 72±5 sec) and percentage of viable sperm (91±2 to 93±2%). The 3-year-old fish produced the greatest (P<0.05) number of spermatozoa (1190±370 X 109 spermatozoa/kg), and had the highest (P<0.05) sperm concentration (120±8 X 109 spermatozoa/ml) and spermatocrit (74±4%). In addition, during short-term storage at 4deg C, extender-preserved sperm samples from the 3-year-old group showed a higher (P<0.05) percentage of motile sperm and duration of sperm motility compared with the other 2 groups (P<0.05). Sperm longevity of the 3-year-old group was successfully maintained for as long as 15 days, longer than that of the 1-year-old group (9 days) and the 12-year-old group (7 days).
