Female Painters in the V&A Tile Collection

One of the founding missions of the Victoria and Albert Museum was to be a resource for the students at the Government School of Design. Established in 1837 at Somerset House, the Schools proposed to educate students in art and design in preparation for industry. Originally male-only, in 1841 a 'Female School' was opened, with a limited range of tuition, mainly constrained to ornamental repetition (F. Graeme Chalmers, 'Fanny Mclan and London's Female School of Design, 1842-57: "My Lords and Gentlemen, Your Obedient and Humble Servant"?', Woman's Art Journal, vol. 16, no. 2, Autumn, 1995-Winter, 1996, pp.3 -9).
