Study on Antibacterial Activity of Propolis on Propionibacterium acnesas an Acne-Induced Bacteria

The exact cause of acne has not been determined, and the number of acne outbreaks in adults has been increasing recently. However, until now, there is no effective treatment. Propolis is widely used as a functional ingredient based on antioxidant andantibacterial activities, but there is insufficient research on Propionibacterium acnes, the acne-causing bacteria. Thus, we conducted a study on the antibacterial activity and active compounds of propolis. The antibacterial activity of propolis collected from 10 regions against P. acnes was measured using 70% ethanol extraction. Antibacterial activity of propolis was excellent in the order of Iran, Korea (Mungyeong), New Zealand, India, Korea (Bukmyeon), Brazil (green), China, Brazil (brown), Uruguay,and Malaysia. In addition, among the 11 compounds known as marker compounds of propolis, the caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) was found to be an active compound. The results of the quantitative analysis of CAPE show that the amount of this compound was high in the order of Iran, Korea (Bukmyeon), New Zealand, Korea (Mungyeong), Uruay, China, India, Malaysia, Brazil (brown), and Brazil (green). Based on these results, propolis extract with a high quantity of CAPE is expected to have high antibacterialactivity against acne-causing bacteria. Thus, propolis extract is presented as a functional natural material related to acne treatment.
