A National Soil Classification System and Soil Mapping for Agro-Technology Transfer: Semantics vs Utility

I am grateful to the Indian Society of Soil Science (ISSS) for having given me the privilege of delivering the 15th Dr. R.S. Murthy Memorial Lecture. When we were neighbours at the same housing complex at Patel Nagar, New Delhi in 1969, Dr. Murthy once remarked to me "Oh- I am working on Soil Survey and Soil Correlation and you are working on Soil Test - Crop Response Correlation. Both themes are equally important". We were both working at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, by then.
