Research into the relationship between the organization and production structures of private farms and the processing industry under conditions of a market economy

The basic aim of the research reported was to establish the types of farm organization and production structure suitable for the development of large private farms focused on both agriculture and the food industry. The focus is on private farms of 50 ha and above, since these are most suitable for servicing industrial markets; the areas chosen were the provinces of Bialystok, Lomza, Olsztyn and Suwalki (north-east Poland), an area of considerable internal variation. The article offers a typology ofdifferent relations between agricultural production and food-processing. The results section considers area of holdings, productivity, commodity production, farm income, technological level, employment and relations with the food industry for each of the sectors cereals, meat, fruit and vegetables, sugar and potatoes. Attention is also given to the problems of privatization and finance. Some consideration is given to future relations between agriculture and industry, with special reference to improvingtheir legal basis.
