V~(4+), existing as VO~(2+), has been extensively used to study the structural properties of vanadium complexes using EPR. An important property of ~(51)V is that it undergoes (n, y) reaction with a cross section of 4.88 barns, resulting in a very short-lived ~(52)V (beta-active with half-life 3.75 min.). The daughter product ~(52)Cr is also suitable for investigations using EPR. Thus, vanadium salts are suitable candidates for EPR investigations aimed at understanding possible modifications in the magnetic and structural properties of the parent compound on neutron irradiation. Further, low dimensional magnetic interactions involving vanadyl ion is of considerable current interest. Vanadyl sulphate normally exists as VOSO_4.5H_2O. On successive dehydration in inert atmosphere it forms three different compounds, VOSO_4.H_2O, alpha-VGSO_4 and P-VOSO_4.
