GROSS AND HISTOPATHOLOGICAL ALTERATIONS IN ADRENAL GLAND OF POULTRY (BROILERS) IN CAECAL COCCIDIOSIS AND GOUT

The current study focuses on the histopathological alterations in the adrenal glands of poultry (broilers) in outbreaks of Caecal coccidiosis and gout. A total of 18 outbreaks were recorded out of which 11 outbreaks were of Caecal coccidiosis and 7 outbreaks were of Gout. On post mortem examination, the adrenal glands were properly collected from the carcasses of the birds and preserved in 10% neutral buffered formalin for fixation. The tissue samples were processed for routine paraffin embedding technique and 5 micron thin tissue sections were stained with Hans' Haematoxylin and Eosin. Changes in the structure of adrenal gland in poultry due to different stressors indicate that adrenal glands are involved in stress reaction. In cases of Caecal coccidiosis there was sinusoidal congestion, oedema along with increased vacuolation of cortical tissue and in cases of gout besides uric acid crystals were observed in the capsule of adrenal glands along with infiltration of mononuclear cells in the parenchyma. From the present study, it could be concluded that endocrinopathies coexisted with the identified diseases and were mostly of haemodynamic origin along with or without mononuclear cell infiltrations. The endocrinopathies observed were mostly suggestive of haemodynamic derangements as adrenal glands revealed sinusoidal congestion, oedema and increased vacuolation of cortical (interrenal) as well as medullary tissue. Investigations into endocrine gland disorders in poultry needs attention for increasing the productivity and profitability from this enterprise.
