SNC Lavalin made its intention to grow in the upstream very clear with the agreed US $1.95 Bn takeover of contractor Kentz. The Canadian firm has been focusing on selling up in the utility business over the last year after identifying the oil and gas sector as a key strategic growth market. In particular it believes that the increased complexity of oil and gas extraction and transportation will protect the positions of industry players who are able to manage large, complex projects and avoid the "commoditisation" of engineering services seen in some other sectors.
