AIDS education programmes hit some targets: improving youth HIV prevention by sharing resources and better addressing community norms and concurrency.

The recent review by Michielsen et al. [1] of HIV prevention trials for youth in sub-Saharan Africa and the subsequent correspondence between them and Helen Epstein [2,3] offer much of value to ongoing HIV intervention research. In their comments, Michielsen et al. [3] described the 1998-2002 MEMA kwa Vijana trial [4,5] in northern Tanzania as one of the two 'most well elaborated interventions and rigorous evaluations'. As principal investigators and other senior staff within that trial, we read the review and resultant correspondence with great interest.
