Influence of some environmental factors on the growth of tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon (Fabricius) during summer and monsoon crops in six brackishwater ponds of west Bengal, India.

The growth and production variability of tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) were examined in relation to certain environmental parameters in six brackishwater ponds during summer and monsoon grow-out periods. The ponds were managed for semi-intensive culture of P. monodon for a four-month production cycle. The stocking density of post-larvae was lower during the monsoon than that during the summer. Frequency distribution of different weight groups of shrimp differed markedly from one pond to another. Production was five- to six-times higher during summer than during the monsoon. This was attributable to the values of temperature/salinity ratio in the two seasons.
