The Sage, Hall One Ian Cook

lAN'S photograph of Hall One at The Sage, a Norman Foster-designed music venue in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, is a great example of how lines can be used to direct the viewer within an image. In this instance, the lines are about as obvious as they could be: there's no avoiding the neon-pink/red lines darting in from the edges of the frame. However, lan's choice of an 11 mm focal length has also had a huge part to play, with the super-wide focal length - a mere 16.5mm equivalent - allowing him to squeeze as much of the acidic lighting into the frame as possible. A tighter crop (as if using a longer focal length) just doesn't have the same impact.
