Whatever the election result, small signs of economic recovery have coincided with spring out here in the west: the Suzuki's mpg reading rose by 0.3mpg to a perky 33.6mpg the other day. As any canny politician would say, that's confirmation that we're on the right track and all the policies we've been bravely working under are now bearing fruit. Okay... the figure went up when I took the Grand Vitara for an uncharacteristically long journey through England's marginal south to the super-safe Tory seat of Henley to check out Fiat's new Doblo. Thereafter, it fell back to its usual figure of 33.3, but it proves that the average could be better than it is.
