Why Cycads are Under ThreatCycads are currently ranked as the most threatened group of organisms on the planet, with more than 60 per cent of known species (in Africa, Asia, Australia, South, and Central America) threatened with extinction. It is estimated that about 10 per cent the extant species are comprised of fewer than 250 mature individuals in the wild. They are extremely vulnerable due to a combination of very slow growth under a changing climate, separation of male and female plants (dioecy), small populations and dependency on pollinators.
