High hopes, and not a little cash, have been invested in the various formats of what has been called controlled environment agriculture (CEA) over recent years. Yet for a range of reasons, progress towards widespread commercial take-up has been stuttering.A conference this month hosted by Agri-Tech East with the Association for Vertical Farming will aim to identify how best to exploit the potential of the various technologies ranging from deep-water hydroponics to "aeroponics" and even robotics in vertical systems. "The promise of CEA is sustainable, intensive production, but achieving that may require a different type of value chain," says Agri-Tech East director Dr Belinda Clarke.
