Parks and gardens have had widely different experiences during the coronavirus lockdown. Parks have seen huge spikes in visitor numbers, while paid-for gardens have been empty. However, the sectors do have one thing in common—both have been unable tocover their costs since lockdown on 23 March.Cash bailouts from Government are set to help. The arts and heritage sector has been awarded E1.57bn while councils were given E1.6bn corona-virus cash in April. As part of its "New Deal", the Government has also announced E900m for a range of "shovel-ready" local growth projects in England over the course of this year and next, as well as E96m to accelerate investment in town centres and high streets through its Towns Fund this year. This will provide each of the 101 towns selected for deals with E0.5m-Elm to spend on projects such as improvements to parks, high streets and transport.
