Toward a sustainable experience in an intermountain valley in Northwestern Argentina.

This paper considers the possibility of sustaining a project in the Chaquivil Valley, Argentina that will make the valley a productive intermountain area and help it achieve a sustainable tourism-based economy. The main aspects (social, biodiversity and freshwater source area) and problems (institutional) are analysed, and the cause of the crisis in the valley is determined. The holistic approach or at least the juxtaposition of perspectives is the way suggested here to obtain real solutions, considering the complexity of problems. The Chaquivil Pilot Project requires a real involvement of local inhabitants in the conservation and sustainability of biodiversity in and around those mid-altitude lands. When ecotourism becomes important, the local workers will be much needed. Perhaps the real value of the Chaquivil highlands is in the water this area provides. Water of good or excellent quality is continuously in demand, particularly for the subtropical and densely populated areas, as well as Tucuman Province..
