Alongside 3 Commando Brigade's annual Winter Deployment, 24 Commando Regiment Royal Engineers were afforded the opportunity to conduct a 3-week special-to-arm training (STA) package. This allowed the Unit to develop new skills and techniques and revise previous combat engineering methods in arduous Arctic conditions, with average temperatures hovering around -20°C and consistent snow in excess of 2 meters in a mountainous environment. The overall aim of the STA was to progress the Sappers in this environment and experiment with an ice runway concept that would allow resupply and insertion options in line with the new Future Commando Force (FCF) model as part of the wider Littoral Strike concept.
