FROGS IN THE HOUSEHOLD: PETS BUT NOT REALLY PETS

Amphibians around the world draw people's attention and there is a selection of the community interested in bringing frogs closer to home (White 2008; Garner et al. 2009). The most basic expression of this is setting up a pond or wetland to attract frogs (Casey 1996). For some, frogs have taken up residence in their cisterns and water tanks regardless of the property owners' level of amphibian enthusiasm (Mo 2014). Others choose to take the next step and keep frogs as pets. Several schools, preschools and child care centres display frogs and tadpoles. The opportunity to watch tadpoles metamorph into frogs enhances classroom experiences for children and potentially provides the most realistic form of ecological education they may ever receive.
