Pierre Joseph Buc'hoz was born on January 27, 1731, the son of Pierre Bughaut, a middle-class attorney in the French city of Metz, and his wife, Jeanne Guerlange. The Metz authorities, for reasons unknown, changed his surname to Buchoz (no apostrophe) in 1758, and later the apostrophe was added for proper pronunciation. The name no longer exists in France and is extremely rare in the U.S., suggesting that all persons of that name can probably trace their ancestry directly to him. American members of the family* pronounce the name "Bew-koze" and "Bew-ko" (the first syllable rhyming with "few"), but a French-speaking person would probably say "Boo-sho."
