Tucsson Show 2019

Officially the city calls it the "Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase"-locals call it "the gem show"-and when innocent outsiders ask us where and when "the" Tucson Show happens, we might have fun asking them what kind of show they are interested in. Then we can explain that during the first half of February something like 45 distinct shows are mounted by different entities all over town. One can shop (we go on explaining) not only for vaguely imagined "gems," but also for jewelry on almost every price level; for lapidary equipment; beads for hobbyist headers; jewelry "findings" (the little metal bits); mystical crystals whose radiances (some say) soothe the spirit and/or cure the lumbago; African masks; Persian carpets; Native American tomahawks or peace pipes; fossils of every size and description ... oh yes, and mineral specimens too. Fortunately for the mineral-oriented visitor, and for this show reporter, there are only five or six shows in the Showcase which offer really good odds of finding good mineral specimens {but, on the other hand, you never know where fabulous sleepers may lie. . .).
