This textbook provides a thorough overview of the use of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in modern endodontic practice. The aim of the book is to discuss how CBCT differs from traditional periapical radiography in the way that the images are acquired, processed, and reconstructed prior to viewing and subsequent interpretation. In doing so it provides an in-depth understanding of how the different images are perceived and how this affects diagnosis, treatment planning, and decision-making. The book is divided into five chapters, chapter one providing a comprehensive introduction. Chapter two discusses technical considerations associated with CBCT. A thorough discussion is provided on the keys steps in the acquisition of these images and how this differs from traditional two-dimensional images. This section also provides clear definitions and reasoning for the different types of artefacts that are commonly encountered with the use of CBCT. Numerous clear radiographic examples and pictures are used to illustrate these phenomena. The following chapter focuses on how and why we perceive images as we do and relates this to what we see on CBCT images. The final two chapters are based on decision-making and the clinical use of CBCT in endodontic practice. Chapter five contains a wide range of photographs of common clinical presentations of teeth and the appropriate corresponding CBCT slices which are very helpful for consolidating the knowledge gained from the book. This final chapter provides a summary that ties the first four chapters together and allows the clinician to apply this knowledge to endodontic presentations. The reader is presented with a sound understanding of the scientific and theoretical background of CBCT images and this enables the clinician to develop a systematic approach to reviewing and diagnosing CBGT images. Although this book is focussed on clinical endodontics, the majority of the text focuses on providing an in-depth understanding of how CBCT images are acquired and what we see. I would therefore recommend this textbook to all clinicians who routinely use CBCT in their practice.
