India's Environment Minister, Jairam Ramesh, has asked the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) to withdraw its permission to Monsanto to carry out field trials of genetically modified insect-resistant Bt maize in the state of Bihar, reports Indian newspaper The Hindu. The trials were given the nod by the GEAC in December. The Minster's intervention came after the state's Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, told him that he was "opposed" to the trials in Bihar as he was not aware of the risks involved.
