Chemical Structure Characteristics of Wood/Lignin Composites During Mold Pressing

To reuse lignin polymers from bioethanol biorefinery plants, wood/ lignin composites (WLC) were modified by mold pressing, processed, and analyzed using Xray diffractometry, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. With increased temperature and time, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin increased the thermal degradation reaction and generated many extracts. Comprehensive analysis of the analytical results suggested that mold pressing at 1608C or 2208C for 20 min was optimal for WLC preparation. However, care should be taken as the volatiles included acetic acid, phenol and its derivatives, and benzene and its derivatives, which are toxic. (C) 2015 Society of Plastics Engineers
