Excerpts of the speech of Mr.R.Rajkumar, Chairman, Nilgiri Planters' Association (NPA) at the 127th Annual General Meeting of the Association held on 22nd September 2018

Statistics show that India is the largest producer of black tea as also the largest consumer of tea. India is the fourth largest exporter of tea. Share of India in world's total tea production is said to be at 26%. In spite of the fact that the statistics are heavily weighted in its favour, productivity and exports cannot be said to be favorably disposed towards India.For plantations weather is a primary concern. The plantations have a vested interest in weather forecasting. Technology based weather forecasting will help the plantations for micro level planning of cultural practices.
