It was July 2000 when John Halewood,the Business Development Manager for GMA Garnet Pty.first stepped off an aeroplane at Baku Airport.The air was laden with the smell of oil and the horizon lit up by the glare from numerous flare stacks.The taxi driver smiled,revealing a mouthful of gold fillings and on the journey into town,showed off his dubious driving skills by avoiding the many potholes in the road,even if it meant occasionally bouncing up onto the pavement.
