November means it's time for harvest throughout the entire pecan industry. While some growers in the Southeast have been picking nuts for nearly two months, those of us out here in the West are just getting going. 'Pawnee' will have been ready for a little bit, while most other varieties are just finishing up and getting ready for shaking. This time of year, we get to see the results of our work that started over a year ago. Since bud selection for the 2019 crop occurred during late summer 2018, it really is the culmination of nearly 18 months of work and worry. I'm frequently asked what newer growers should do to prepare their orchards and themselves for harvest. As usual, this article combines a smattering of my experience with observations and anecdotes I've gleaned over the years in the pecan industry to offer some pre-harvest advice.
