Breast milk is the best food for infants and it should be the first choice for infant nutrition since it fulfills the nutritive requirements for optimal growth; in addition, it contains a number of protective and immunoregulatory components, such as immunoglobulins, immunocompetent cells and different antimicrobial compounds that are responsible for the protection of the newborn against infectious diseases, and other components, such as nudeotides, fatty acids or oligosaccharides, that are involved in other critical functions such as growth regulation, cognitive development and/or intestina maturation.
