While attending high school in Iowa City, Iowa, in the late 1930s, my parents felt that capable guys like me should be making their own pocket money. I agreed. In the summer of 1939 I found a summer job as a section hand for the Rock Island Railroad.Roger Strand, a high school friend, and I hired out to join a crew of ten men, all of whom were elderly Hispanic men who had spent their lives as laborers on railroad sections.
