Lessons that link mathematics and science show students the interconnectedness of learning and the utility of mathematics in science applications. According to the Framework, science curricula should be integrated to improve understanding of mathematics in science and overall understanding of scientific principles (NRC 2012). The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) affirm the importance of integrating science and mathematics (NGA 2010; NGSS Lead States 2013). The overlap of the NGSS and CCSS emphasizes the foundational importance of mathematics in science learning and suggests combining the two disciplines is an effective way to teach and assess students.
