A better understanding of the geology of the Marcellus Shale in northeastern Pennsylvania could give a big boost to the portfolio of Cabot Oil & Gas. The Appalachian-focused independent believes that it can produce more gas from the Upper Marcellus portion of the prolific shale formation after a handful of new tests in the formation. To date, Cabot has landed almost all of its wells in the Lower Marcellus. The company is now able to land horizontal wells in both parts because of the thickness of the formation underlying its acreage centered in Susquehanna County. The formation ranges in thickness from 290 feet-470 feet, well above that seen in the southern portion of the play.
