Electric vehicles (EVs) are all the rage at this week's Frankfurt Auto Show, as big-name car makers strut future plans to roll out a flood of models. The unmistakable message: rapid advances in lithium battery technology are about to blindside the global automobile market - and that might not play out badly for the natural gas sector. Still, it's debatable how much of the transportation market EVs will usurp from gasoline and diesel. As inroads by natural gas vehicles (NGVs) show, traditional fuels are vulnerable in some niche markets. And that's only due to the ability of gas to deliver the high horsepower needed for long-haul trucking, waste-disposal and municipal bus fleets, mining operations, etc., at lower costs to the bottom line and the environment.
