Efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic in the US have begun to bear fruit, but flattening the curve of infections has taken gas demand down with it.Where and by how much gas use has fallen is just becoming clear, but it’s certain that demand destruction is under way and the impact could be felt for months,if not years.”This is a black swan event and we did not anticipate it,”Rob Ellis with gas marketer CenterPoint Energy Services told Energy Intelligence.”No one’s seen an event like this in modern times.”Ellis, vice president for sales and origination, along with CenterPoint Director of Origination David Tucker, said they have been doing”high-level”analysis to get a better understanding of where gas demand losses might settle between a likely range of 2 billion to 5 billion cubic feet per day,if not higher, from the current annual average around 80 Bcf/d.But figuring that out is challenging given the unprecedented nature of the cause.
