New York's Green Policy Dreams Hitting Reality of Energy Demand

>There are state‐level debates taking place across the country over preferred policy solutions to address climate change, while simultaneously maintaining energy system reliability. While New York is no exception in this regard, the state has reached somewhat of an impasse when it comes to ensuring that residents will have access to low‐cost, cleaner energy supplies needed to support continued economic growth. For more than a decade, New York has broadly focused its efforts on reducing the state's reliance on coal and oil to reduce emissions, with the state increasingly relying on natural gas and renewables to make up the difference in electric power supply. These efforts have been largely successful, resulting in a 20 percent decline in carbon dioxide emissions statewide between 2005 and 2015.
