Retrospective: CIMAC Circle at SMM 2016 in Hamburg

Under the title, "Environmental compliance strategies under the light of changes in the oil market", the traditional CIMAC Circle at the SMM marine trade show took place on 8th September 2016 and attracted an audience eager to hear expert opinions from both sides of industry. The panel was chaired by Paolo Tonon from Maersk Maritime Technology, who with his varied CV offers experience from both the supply and user sides of the engine industry. The panel was completed by major suppliers from the engine industry; - Niklas Sievers, General Manager Medium Speed Products at ABB Turbo Systems - Kjeld Aabo, Head of Marine and Offshore 2-4 stroke sales at MAN Diesel & Turbo - Mikael Wideskog, Director Research & Technology Programs at Wartsila - Mark Lipton, Director Commercial Applications at GE Marine Paolo Tonon gave a resume of the current situation, as seen by engine using industries. Although reduced in scope following postponement of ECA designations, emissions reduction was now well underway, particularly in connection with sulphur in fuels. Although superficially a benefit for an industry faced with historically low freight rates, the low oil price was reducing the investment in the energy sector which is a vital driver of the world economy, adding to stagnation. Engine owners and operators worldwide were facing multiple challenges at a time of growing over-capacity.
