The Food Ministry will soon seek Cabinet approval to facilitate additional loans worth around INR74 bln (USD1=INR70.38) to 168 sugar mills which plan to enhance their ethanol production capacity, reported the local press. In September, the Union government had approved 114 proposals by mills across the country for investment in ethanol capacity. For these proposals, the centre facilitated soft loans worth INR61.39 bln. In June, the Cabinet had approved measures for sugar mills to raise their ethanol capacity by allocating subsidised loans worth INR44.4 bln to them. However, in August, it removed the cap on the loan amount for sugar mills.
