ETHANOL IMPORTS IN Q1 DOWN SHARPLY ON THE YEAR

Ethanol imports in March 2019 amounted to around 7.4 mln litres, trade data show, against 4.1 mln in the preceding month and 176.5 mln one year earlier. Imports so far in calendar year 2019 declined y/y to 23.1 mln litres from 494.8 mln. The main origins were Pakistan (13.2 mln litres vs 70.2 mln), South Africa (6.8 mln vs nil) and Sudan (5.9 mln vs nil). At the same time, arrivals from the United States fell to marginal levels from 424.4 mln litres, following the increased import duties. Exports in Q1 2019 fell y/y to 5.4 mln litres from 8.9 mln. Out of this, 4.2 mln litres went to North Korea, down from 7.8 mln.
