Sturgeon Refinery in Alberta Marks First New Canadian Refinery in 30 Years

The start of the Sturgeon Refinery in Redwater, Alberta, marked the first new oil refinery to be built in Canada in more than 30 years, the National Energy Board (NEB) noted in a recent statement. Much like the U.S. refining sector, the number of refineries in Canada has decreased over the past 35 years, while the capacity/output of the remaining refineries has increased, according to the Canadian Fuels Association, the trade group representing most oil refiners. The capacity gain has come through replacing smaller, less efficient units with refineries that are more efficient, with new technology and equipment, the group said.
